EMBALMING FLUID, ARTERIAL
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Military Specification MIL-E-1006.
1. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
1.1 Material and composition. The finished product shall be clear, homogenous and free from sediment and it shall have an indefinite shelf life. The arterial embalming fluid shall contain a dye as required to give the fluid a distinct red or pink color when examined visually in a clear glass container. The following ingredients shall be included in the finished formulation, expressed in percent by weight, except for the formaldehyde index number which is expressed in grams of formaldehyde per 100 milliliters of solution:

1.2 Formaldehyde index number test. The method for determining the concentration of formaldehyde in embalming fluid shall be in accordance with ASTM D 2194. The specific gravity, apparent, of the embalming fluid shall be determined in accordance with Method A of ASTM D 891 when the fluid is 20° C. The specific gravity of the embalming fluid multiplied by the percent formaldehyde concentration equals the formaldehyde index number.
