EMBALMING FLUID, CAVITY
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to MIl-E-1439.
1. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
1.1 Material and composition. The finished product shall be clear, homogenous, free from sediment, and either colorless or of a color other than red or pink shade when observed in a clear glass container. The following ingredients shall be included in the finished formulation, expressed in percent by weight, except for the formaldehyde index number which shall be expressed in grams of formaldehyde per milliliter of solution:

1.2 prohibited ingredients. The embalming fluid shall contain no more than 5 parts per million of any of the following: antimony, arsenic, lead, mercury, copper, zinc, silver, chloral, cyanide, or alkaloids. Alcohols, other than methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, and ethanol denatured with methanol, shall not be used.
2. QUALITY ASSSURANCE
2.1 Formaldehyde index number test. The method for determining the concentration of formaldehyde in embalming fluid shall be in accordance with ASTM D 2194. The specific gravity, apparent, of the embalming fluid shall be determined in accordance with METHOD A of ASTM D 891 when the fluid is 20OC. The specific gravity of the embalming fluid multiplied by the percent formaldehyde concentration equals the formaldehyde index number.
